Stage lighting in a theatre

Cambridge · Est. 2014

Where the work
begins in earnest.

Drenovo is a Cambridge acting school built around structured study, careful mentorship, and the patient development of craft. We offer courses for people who are serious about learning.

"Acting is not about being someone different. It's finding the similarity in what is apparently different, then finding myself in there."

— Meryl Streep

"An actor must interpret life, and in order to do so must be willing to accept all the experiences life has to offer."

— James Dean

"The instrument through which you see everything in this art is your own feelings, your own heart, your own sensibility."

— Stanislavski

"You have to be willing to be stupid and not know anything, and allow yourself to be a student, and say 'I don't know if I can do this'."

— Emma Thompson

Craft before performance. Discipline before expression.

At Drenovo, we believe that the study of acting is a long-term engagement with human experience. Our courses are not designed to accelerate anyone toward a particular outcome, but to develop the understanding, awareness, and physical presence from which genuine performance grows.

We work within a structured weekly framework that balances technique with exploration, and individual development with ensemble work. Every programme is taught by practitioners with substantial working experience in theatre and related disciplines.

Technical study at Drenovo is grounded in time-tested methodologies — Stanislavski's system, Meisner's repetition exercises, physical score work, and detailed textual analysis. These are not treated as interchangeable toolkits but as distinct approaches, each demanding real engagement.

Much of what acting teaches cannot be found in solitary practice. Our ensemble sessions place students in responsive, collaborative work from the earliest stages. Learning to listen, to give space, and to remain present in relationship with others is as important as any individual skill.

Feedback at Drenovo is specific, honest, and unhurried. Rather than general observations, our instructors focus on what is actually visible in each exercise — what is working, what is getting in the way, and what small adjustments might open new possibilities.

Three structured courses, one shared standard of work.

Each programme is taught by experienced practitioners and designed to develop a specific aspect of performance — from foundational technique to detailed audition work.

Acting Foundations class Foundations

10 Weeks · Beginner–Intermediate

Acting Foundations

A structured introduction to acting technique, covering scene work, character analysis, physical awareness, and basic text approach. Suitable for those new to formal study and those returning after a period away.

Voice and movement class Voice

8 Weeks · All Levels

Voice & Movement

A dedicated programme exploring breath, projection, resonance, articulation, and physical presence. Students develop a more grounded relationship with their instrument — body and voice working in coordination.

Audition preparation session Audition

6 Weeks · Intermediate

Audition Preparation Lab

A focused programme built around audition technique — including monologue selection, cold reading, scene work under pressure, and structured feedback on presentation. Practical rather than prescriptive.

What a training day looks like.

Sessions at Drenovo follow a consistent rhythm — beginning with physical warm-up, moving through technique exercises, and arriving at scene or text work. This structure is deliberate. Good work rarely emerges from scattered attention.

Below is an outline of how a standard three-hour session is typically structured. The specifics vary by programme and week.

Ask a Question
1

0:00 – 0:30

Physical Warm-Up

The session begins with structured body work — releasing tension, establishing breath, and bringing attention into the room. This is not optional and not perfunctory.

2

0:30 – 1:00

Technique Exercises

Focused exercises drawn from the programme's technical strand — Meisner repetition, voice work, status exercises, or physical score development, depending on the week's focus.

3

1:00 – 1:15

Short Break

Unstructured time for conversation, reflection, or rest. Students often describe this as where a great deal of processing happens.

4

1:15 – 2:30

Scene Work & Text

Prepared or cold scene work, with instructor observation and feedback. Each student works, watches, and feeds back on others. This is the centrepiece of each session.

5

2:30 – 3:00

Reflection & Close

Group discussion on the session's themes, individual observations, and practical notes for the coming week. Students are encouraged to write in a training journal.

Taught by practitioners, not theorists.

Our teaching staff are working theatre professionals with years of classroom experience. They bring current knowledge of the industry alongside patient, craft-centred pedagogy.

What students say about their experience.

I came to Drenovo with no formal training, a good deal of self-consciousness, and a vague sense that I wanted to understand what acting actually involved. The first term gave me a real working vocabulary and enough curiosity to want to continue.
Acting Foundations, Spring 2023
The Voice and Movement course changed how I use my body on stage. I had always treated it as an afterthought — something that just happened while the important work was going on with the text. Niamh's sessions made it clear that the two are inseparable.
Voice & Movement, Autumn 2022
I have done short courses elsewhere, but nothing quite matched the quality of attention we received at Drenovo. The instructors are rigorous without being harsh, and the feedback is always grounded in what they actually observed — not in general ideas about what acting should look like.
Acting Foundations & Audition Lab, 2023
The Audition Lab was honest about what an audition can and cannot tell you. David didn't promise that good preparation guarantees success, but he made it clear that bad preparation almost guarantees failure. That distinction was genuinely useful.
Audition Preparation Lab, Summer 2023
What I value most about Drenovo is the consistency. The standard of teaching does not vary from week to week. I always came out of a session having been genuinely challenged, and with a clearer sense of what I was working towards.
Voice & Movement, Winter 2023

Writing on craft and practice.

Building Stage Confidence Through Practice

Stage confidence is not a personality trait. It is a skill developed through structured, repeated, and reflective practice — and it develops differently in each person.

Different Pathways in Acting: Stage, Screen, and Voice

Acting for the stage, for the camera, and for the microphone are distinct disciplines with shared roots. Understanding their differences helps students make clearer decisions about where to focus their development.

If you have a question that is not answered here, please use our contact form or send us an email. We are glad to provide more detail about any aspect of our programmes.

Get in Touch
Acting Foundations is designed for those with little or no prior training, as well as those returning to study after a gap. Voice & Movement accepts students at all levels. The Audition Preparation Lab is designed for students who have some previous scene work experience, whether from Drenovo or elsewhere.
We maintain small groups — typically between eight and fourteen students per class. This size allows for meaningful individual attention within a proper ensemble context. We do not accept more students than this threshold permits.
Comfortable clothing that allows free movement — nothing restrictive around the chest, waist, or shoulders. Flat, soft-soled shoes are preferable for movement work. A notebook and pen are useful for reflective writing between sessions.
We occasionally run focused weekend workshops on specific areas of practice — audition technique, text analysis, or physical work. These are announced to current and former students first. If you are interested, contact us to be added to our mailing list.
We offer a one-session taster to prospective students who are unsure whether a programme is right for them. This takes place at the start of a term. Availability is limited — please contact us in advance to arrange this.

If you are curious about the work, the next step is simply to ask.

We are happy to answer questions about any of our programmes, discuss what might suit your interests, or arrange a taster session.
